Principles of Design
An introduction to close-looking.
Two outdoor sculptures and 7 artworks in 3 galleries
Path Description
Principles of Design is an introduction to looking at art, using slow-looking techniques to encourage deeper appreciation and richer conversations around art. Students use the elements of art and principles of design to consider artistic and material choices, as well as an artwork's overall impression.
Educators will find this option particularly useful for students who are new to the principles of design or elements of art, not used to talking about art, and are new to artmaking in a class studio setting.
Path Goals
On this path, students will:
be introduced/refreshed on Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
apply the Elements and Principles as a method to engage in close-looking.
build critical thinking and interpretation skills.
share their own ideas about art, architecture, and nature.
