Path Description

Students will spend time in Glenstone’s long-term exhibition, Iconoclasts: Selections from Glenstone’s Collection. The exhibition showcases artists who have made significant contributions to 20th-century art.

Focusing on key figures in Glenstone’s collection, students will explore the relationships between global artistic movements. They will investigate how these artists influenced each other, their motivations for creating revolutionary and subversive artworks, and the development of artistic practice from the early to late 20th century.

Educators will find this path option to be most appropriate for students who are introduced to modern and contemporary art for the first time or need a refresher on modern and contemporary art history. This path is also a great option for students who are aspiring artists and want to develop a distinct and groundbreaking voice.

Path Goals

On this path, students will:

• be introduced to artists and a visual timeline of the 20th and 21st centuries whose work has redefined the way we experience and understand art.

• learn about the historical and visual relationships and similarities between artists and artistic movements around the world.

• appreciate the cultural contexts that shaped the art of different artists within the exhibition.

• understand how artistic techniques and approaches evolved over time.

This path was designed to meet the following Maryland State Fine Arts Standards. The standards are used as a guide for our discussions and make stronger connections to the current state-wide curriculum. 

• Anchor Standard 6: Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.

• Anchor Standard 11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding.

In this path, students will look at a collection of artworks within a gallery. This may include some of the following artworks.
