Wingstem

Verbesina alternifolia

Location: Woodland Trail, Arrival Hall, Four Rounds
In Bloom: August through October
Verbesina alternifolia, also known as wingstem, is a flowering perennial plant with growth heights reaching three-to-eight feet tall. The common name of this plant comes from the presence of raised ridges, resembling small wings, which run down the length of the main stem from the leaf nodes. Topped with bright yellow flowers that bloom from August to October, this Eastern North American native plant is as tough as it is showstopping. The Glenstone Grounds team found this plant thriving naturally on campus near the Arrival Hall bridge and have worked to incorporate more of it throughout campus due to its resilient and deer-resistant nature.
