Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Glenstone is home to several hawk species. One of the most colorful and common, the Red-shouldered hawk, Buteo lineatus is native to Maryland and the entire eastern United States—its only real threat coming from forest fragmentation. As its name implies this hawk has striking rust-colored shoulders along with a white belly and barred chest. It is often seen at Glenstone gliding on three-foot wings through the woodlands and along streams where it feeds on frogs, snakes, chipmunks, mice, and voles. When hunting, Red-shouldered hawks perch in trees and wait for their prey to come to them. They can sometimes be seen perched on top of Richard Serra’s Contour 290, 2004, a prime rodent hunting spot.
