Pickerel Rush

Pontederia cordata

Location: Woodland Trail, Pavilions Watercourt
Pickerel rush, also known as pickerelweed, is a native bog plant that grows one to four feet high along the margins of ponds and can become invasive in shallow areas. At Glenstone, this plant is found in the Water Court, on the Lily Pond, and in the oxbows of the Sandy Branch tributary. Its club-shaped purple clusters of flowers blossom in profusion from May to November and attract a wide variety of pollinators. The flowers typically rise above the lush green stems and spade-shaped foliage. These flowers play an important part on the Water Court because they provide vivid color throughout the growing season.
