The northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon) is found throughout eastern and central North America, from Florida to Texas and as far north as Canada. It grows to over four feet in length and can vary in color, with shades of brown, black, red, and gray that change drastically depending on whether its scales are wet or dry. Of the 20 species of snakes found at and around Glenstone, the northern water snake is easily the most misidentified and is commonly mistaken for the venomous northern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen). While the northern water snake is nonvenomous, it will defend itself if threatened, using repeated strikes and the release of musk. As such, please admire these wonderful animals from a distance.
