Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

The dignified great blue heron (Ardea herodias) is found throughout North America, often along bodies of water. This heron is the largest of its species, and resides farther north than others, even during winter months when waters freeze. The great blue heron frequently spotted at Glenstone, affectionately nicknamed “the Admiral,” can be seen effortlessly gliding over the landscape before landing along the banks of the Gallery Pond. Standing guard over the water, as still as the cattails, visitors may see the Admiral waiting for the opportune time to dive into the pond to catch an unsuspecting fish.
