Gray Treefrog

Hyla versicolor

There are two species of gray treefrogs found in Maryland who are visually indistinguishable, the Gray Treefrog (Hyla versicolor) and Cope’s Gray Treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis). These large arboreal frogs come in green, brown, and gray and feature warty patterned skin reminiscent of lichen. Gray tree frogs have webbed hands and feet that produce an adhesive fluid allowing them to climb a variety of surfaces including the large glass windows of the Pavilions. While walking along the Passage see if you can spot a tree frog relaxing on the windows surrounding the Water Court—this is a great way to get a peek of the frog’s white belly and the underside of their legs which feature a hidden pattern of orange and yellow bands.
