Cattails, along with frogs on lily pads, are among the emblematic features of a pond and can all be found in the Water Court. Many different species of cattail exist throughout the world but only a few are native to North America. While some varieties of cattail can exceed ten feet in height, the graceful cattail found in the Water Court only rise a few feet above the water’s surface. As their iconic brown seed heads, known as catkins, begin to weather, individual seeds float off in the breeze and find new places to take root in the Water Court. Watching the movement of its slender foliage in the wind reveals how the graceful cattail earned its name.
