Ebony Jewelwing

Calopteryx maculate

The ebony jewelwing (Calopteryx maculate) is a type of damselfly belonging to the order of insects called Odonata, a group that includes both dragonflies and damselflies, with members first emerging during the Triassic Period, 252–201 million years ago. Unlike dragonflies, damsel flies have teardrop-shaped wings which they typically hold upright when at rest. The male ebony jewelwing has lustrous black wings and an iridescent green body. The female is slightly duller in coloration, with a distinctive white spot at each of her four wing tips. Ebony jewelwings are fierce predators, capable of catching gnats and mosquitos in midair.
