Eastern Pondhawk

Erythemis simplicicollis

The eastern pondhawk is a dragonfly native to the eastern two-thirds of the United States and some parts of Southern Canada. They live near ponds and other still water where they establish territory for hunting prey and finding mates. The coloration of the eastern pondhawk varies based on its developmental stage and sex. Baby eastern pondhawks (nymphs) are identifiable by their green eyes and after their final molt the nymphs are transformed into dull green adults. As they mature, adult eastern pondhawks exhibit sexual dimorphism with females becoming bright green with dark brown banding and males turning a powdery dull blue.
