In Bloom: March through May
Cornus florida, the flowering dogwood, is a small understory tree common throughout the eastern United States. Even though it is now commonly planted in the suburban landscape, it finds its glory in the eastern woodlands, where it blooms alongside the eastern redbud. The flowering dogwood is known for its early blooms, brilliant fall foliage, and red berries —the latter of which attracts songbirds and gamebirds alike. American robins, Northern cardinals, tufted titmice, dark-eyed juncos, bluebirds, waxwings, and turkeys all feast on these fruits throughout the winter.
