Dwarf Fothergilla

Fothergilla gardenii

Location: Smug
In Bloom: April and May
Fothergilla gardenii, or coastal witch alder, are small, hard-working shrubs which make excellent foundation plants with four-season interest. As you walk around Glenstone in early spring, you may detect the honey-sweet fragrance of dwarf Fothergilla, which will soon be bursting with hundreds of bottlebrush-shaped flowers—a brilliant display lasting up to three weeks. By autumn, Fothergilla boasts a bold display of golden-yellow and orange-red leaves that varies annually depending on annual amounts of sun, rain, and heat.
