Common Five-lined Skink

Plestiodon fasciatus

The common five-lined skink (Plestiodon fasciatus) is Maryland’s most common lizard. These small terrestrial lizards thrive in wooded areas and are often spotted on warm days basking in the sun. Juveniles have black bodies, five yellow or white stripes running from head to body, and a strikingly blue tail. Adults exhibit sexual dimorphism with females retaining similar coloration to the juveniles minus the blue tail, but the males are uniformly tan or olive in coloration and exhibit vibrant red/orange jaws during breeding season (May-June).
