Carolina Horsenettle

Solanum carolinense

Location: Meadows, Env Center, Pavilions Greenroof
In Bloom: May through October
Although rarely used in gardens, the Carolina horsenettle, Solanum carolinense, is one of the most noticeable warm-season perennials growing in Glenstone's meadows. With its signature star-shaped flowers and green and yellow berries resembling tiny tomatoes, this low-growing plant is easy to spot. Despite its name, Carolina horsenettle is not a true nettle, but a member of the nightshade family—and it is toxic to humans. Fortunately, it does not have the same effect on the local turkeys and skunks, who visitors may see feasting on the fruit.
