Black-eyed Susan

Rudbeckia hirta

Location: Meadows, Pavilions Greenroof
Maryland’s state flower, Rudbeckia hirta, commonly known as black-eyed Susan, is named for its striking black center framed by a ring of yellow petals. The flower inhabits sunny, open spaces through-out eastern North America and is an excellent plant for pollinating insects. Its seeds provide a valuable food source for many bird species. These qualities, along with its tolerance of a range of soil conditions, make it a great choice for domestic yards or wildflower gardens. At Glenstone, the black-eyed Susan can be seen in the meadow along the arrival path, where it gifts the landscape with a yellow hue throughout the summer.
