Bees

Families Apidae, Halictidae, Andrenidae, Megachilidae, and Colletidae

Bees are an integral part of the ecosystem, responsible for pollinating blossoming plants that ultimately produce fruits, nuts, and berries. In Maryland alone, over 400 species of native bees can be found in the landscape, including the docile bumblebee (Bombus), the wood-burrowing large carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica), and the sweat bee (Halictidae). Bee populations are in severe decline worldwide due to threats from climate change, pollution, habitat destruction, disease, and pesticides. Glenstone’s expansive landscape and commitment to organic practices provide a haven for these essential pollinators.
