Barred Owl

Strix varia

For this popular bird species in Maryland that spends time near rivers, in low-lying woods, and in the tops of hollow trees, Glenstone provides the perfect playground. The barred owl’s noise-reducing feathers allow near-soundless flight when hunting for mice, voles, frogs, and snakes, among other prey. Although this discreet bird is nocturnal, if you listen closely while exploring the grounds, particularly around the bridge near the Arrival Hall, you may hear its unique call, whose sound resembles the words Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?

–Alicia Davis, from the Glenstone Field Guide
