The American toad, Anaxyrus americanus, is North America's most common toad and Glenstone's most common amphibian. They can be brown, grey, olive, or reddish in color and have thick, dry, wart-covered skin. This toad has an amazing ability to adapt to their surroundings, needing only shallow water for breeding, dense vegetation for cover and hunting, plus a supply of food. The American toad is not a picky eater, living off a variety of insects—anything smaller than themselves. A good time for toad sightings is just after a rain when the earthworms emerge, this brings out all the toads looking for a fat snack.
