Presented in Room 2 of the Pavilions, this monographic survey was the largest exhibition of work by Canadian artist Jeff Wall (b. 1946) in the United States since his 2007 mid-career survey at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the first in the Washington, DC area since 1997. Comprised of nearly 30 works spanning five decades, the exhibition brought together the full range of Wall’s innovative oeuvre, from early pictures displayed in lightboxes and black and white silver gelatin prints to more recent large-scale inkjet color prints. Though most of his pictures appear to capture real-time events, they are carefully composed to develop narrative cues tied to literary, philosophical, cinematic, and art historical references.
