In Room 6 of the Pavilions was the first solo presentation of works by American artist Arthur Jafa (b. 1960) in the Washington, DC area. As an artist and filmmaker, Jafa collects and produces images, both still and moving, connecting the dots that make up American culture and how Black aesthetics operate within contemporary discourses. According to Jafa, he aims to create work with “the power, beauty, and alienation of Black music.” Best known for his videos incorporating powerful montages of found images and videos, Jafa’s presentation at Glenstone brought together a variety of modes and media central to his practice, including video, sculpture, and photography.
