Zanele Muholi

b. Umlazi, South Africa, 1972

South African visual activist Zanele Muholi employs documentary photography, videography, and portraiture to advocate for justice and shed light on homophobic violence. They explain, “Since slavery and colonialism, images of us African women have been used to reproduce heterosexuality and white patriarchy, and these systems of power have so organised our everyday lives that it is difficult to visualise ourselves as we actually are in our respective communities.” This representation comes in the form of tender domestic images of Black South African lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people’s lives, as well as striking high contrast self-portraits.
