William Wegman

b. Holyoke, MA, 1943

Witty and whimsical, the work of artist William Wegman has captivated viewers for more than five decades. While trained as a painter, he became an early proponent of Conceptual art, experimenting in performance, photography, and video works that focused subtly on visual puns. Wegman gained wide acclaim for portraits of his beloved Weimaraner dogs, beginning in the 1970s with his pet Man Ray—named after the famed artist. His muses and collaborators, Wegman’s dogs have appeared in books, magazines, and television series, dressed in costumes, posing on furniture, or acting out scenes from fairy tales. While charming and humorous, Wegman’s work is also insightful and inventive, exploring the relationships between humans and animals; art and life; and reality and illusion.
