Wade Guyton

b. Hammond, IN, 1972

Using a computer and printer as his paintbrushes, Wade Guyton creates artwork that considers the evolving relationship between original images and their reproductions. He is best known for intentionally misusing printer technology, forcing primed linen through inkjet printers, then stretching the resulting canvases like traditional paintings. Overworking the printer, each painting leaves behind traces of its production. Employing this technique for the suite of 26 paintings that comprise Untitled, 2020–2021, in Glenstone’s collection, Guyton presents a dizzying array of images—screenshots, personal photos, and colorful bitmap files—presented as sculptural stacks leaning against the wall. Made during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the paintings purposefully obscure their imagery, reflecting the collective isolation and uncertainty of the time.
