Thomas Schütte

b. Oldenburg, Germany , 1954

From sculptures of faces and contorted bodies to inventive models of modern houses, in his practice German artist Thomas Schütte invites us to occupy alternate worlds. Schütte subverts expectations of traditional sculpture by distorting relative scale. This process of defamiliarization encourages introspection and interactions that activate the art. According to Schütte, “[My work is] like theater scenery, and the viewer becomes part of the set…I see a whole room in each piece, with the viewer as actor on stage.” By casting viewers in an active role, Schütte disrupts the typical inertia of a museum visit.
