Tavares Strachan

b. Nassau, Bahamas, 1979

Working at the intersection of art, science, culture, and history, artist Tavares Strachan is known for ambitious, adventurous works that challenge our perception of the world and reveal the stories of the invisible and marginalized. Astronomy, deep-sea exploration, and climatology all factor into Strachan’s monumental works as means of investigating themes of cultural displacement, human aspiration, and adverse circumstances. His series The Encyclopedia of Invisibility, for example, is both sculptural and literary. Featuring thousands of entries on historically marginalized people, places, and events, the works comprise a written and illustrated inverse of the Encyclopædia Britannica. With its extensive research detailing overlooked histories, the series decolonizes and subverts dominant narratives of the past.
