Suellen Rocca

b. Chicago, IL, 1943
d. Naperville, IL, 2020

Suellen Rocca was one of the six founding members of the Hairy Who, a Chicago-based artist group with a mutual desire to exhibit art in playful and exciting ways—including creating comic books to accompany shows, displaying paintings on flower-patterned linoleum walls, and hanging price tags directly on the art. Rocca’s paintings feature a symbolic, almost hieroglyphic language with repeated symbols and images pervading many of her canvases. She was inspired by images from picture books, popular culture, and consumerism—especially advertisements targeting women.
