Associated with the Neo-Concrete movement in Brazil, sculptor Sergio Camargo is known for his experimental sculptural wall reliefs. Camargo’s extensive travel and an extended stay in Paris prompted a fusion of Brazilian and European traditions. His meticulous assemblies of cuboid and cylindrical forms made of wood, terracotta, stone, or marble are typically supported on a white monochrome base. These forms respond to the organic interactions between shadow and light. Camargo believed that his materials would speak for themselves, once saying of his works that “they are only what they know how to be,” indicating that his abstract forms were driven by a working method that relied heavily on intuition.
