Robert Therrien

b. Chicago, IL, 1947
d. Los Angeles, CA, 2019

American artist Robert Therrien is best known for creating oversized, detailed sculptures of ordinary domestic objects—including folding chairs, kitchen tables, and stacks of plates—that create an immediate impression on viewers, who may find themselves transported to a place of childlike wonder. Therrien’s larger sculptural practice draws on a sensibility informed by looking and meditating on the everyday. Full-scale reproductions of rooms and symbols such as snowmen, keyholes, and hats become enigmas that draw attention to seemingly simple quotidian items.
