While Robert Irwin is widely associated with the Light and Space movement, it is difficult to ascribe to him any specific tradition. The artist initially started painting in an abstract style but shifted into three-dimensional work with his acclaimed series of convex painted disks. With these works Irwin sought to break the boundary between object and environment by blurring the edges of his sculptures until they would dissolve into the shadows of the walls on which they would hang. Irwin’s focus later shifted from a single object in space to altering the scale of full environments.
