b. Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1961

Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija confounds traditional notions of artmaking by examining the sanctity of the art object and the spaces in which it is displayed. The act of “freeing” an architectural space from its original purpose by removing walls, windows, and doors is a hallmark of his practice, as is incorporating radical artistic elements, including the preparation and serving of food. FEAR EATS THE SOUL, 2011, in Glenstone’s collection, is an immersive artwork intended to be social, accessible, and mutable with time; the installation combines conviviality and community with institutional critique. Communal elements include a soup kitchen with a rotating menu of recipes; a T-shirt factory with silkscreened shirts available to visitors; and graffitied walls that evolve over the course of every presentation through the participation of local artists.
