Rineke Dijkstra

b. Sittard, Netherlands, 1959

Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra is renowned for making photographic portraits that brilliantly capture the essence and emotion of her subjects. Much of her work centers on subjects in their adolescence, capturing their awkwardness and the beauty of transitional stages of life. In the Almerisa series, a striking work spanning 14 years, the artist found her muse in a Bosnian refugee displaced to the Netherlands. Through sporadic, neutral portraits, the eleven photographs in the series illustrate the evolution of one girl’s life as she grows into an adult with a child of her own.
