R.H. Quaytman employs a range of materials, including oil paint, gouache, varnish, glitter, and ink, to create densely layered compositions that shift between abstraction and figuration, sometimes within a single painting. Quaytman’s artistic output is modeled on the structure of a book; each body of work is referred to as a “chapter” and is often tied to a specific institution, time period, and place. In Glenstone’s collection are two complete chapters. Morning: Chapter 30, 2016, is a panoramic painting inspired by the American West, the history of landscape painting, and a fraught time in American politics. The Sun Does Not Move: Chapter 35, 2019, explores the artist’s unique relationship to Łódź, Poland, the city from which Quaytman’s grandfather emigrated and a region of major development of the avant-garde in the early twentieth century, where artists such as Katarzyna Kobro and Władysław Strzemiński pushed the boundaries of abstract sculpture and painting.
