Rachel Harrison

b. New York, NY, 1966

Rachel Harrison is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, photography, drawing, and video, often combining handmade forms with found objects or photographs. Her colorful and provocative juxtapositions explore connections between art history, politics, and pop culture. Sculpture with Boots, 2017, in Glenstone’s collection, embodies this approach. Standing nearly eight feet tall, its form recalls the shape and scale of natural rock formations, realized with vibrant hues of paint oscillating from gridded patches to freeform gradations of iridescent color. As the viewer moves around the work, a framed photograph is revealed: an image taken by Harrison of empty, worn, paint-splattered shoes identified as “Lee Krasner’s painting boots.” A tribute to artist Lee Krasner, Harrison draws attention to Krasner’s significance to the history of art, while alluding to her unwarranted absence in many historical narratives.
