Pino Pascali

b. Bari, Italy, 1935
d. Rome, Italy, 1968

Pino Pascali was an Italian sculptor, scene painter, and set designer. A member of the Arte Povera movement, he manipulated found objects and utilized nontraditional materials to create playful, fantastical sculptures. Among Pascali’s best-known works are a series he dubbed “fake sculptures,” which are made of canvases shaped to appear as though they are solid sculptures. They are abstract forms that hint at animals, plants, and landscapes. Often displayed on the wall, Pascali’s sculptures present organic, dreamlike shapes that play on the relationship between reality and illusion.
