Njideka Akunyili Crosby

b. Enugu, Nigeria, 1983

Njideka Akunyili Crosby creates textural collaged artworks that often depict domestic scenes of kinship. Crosby moved to the United States from her native Nigeria as a teenager. Her work illustrates what can be considered a “third space,” somewhere between her memory of the cultural experiences of her youth in Nigeria and her lived experience of American culture. Drawing from a rich archive of images including personal photographs and clippings from Nigerian and American magazines, Crosby primarily works in printmaking and collage. In 2017, she received the MacArthur Fellowship, also known as the “Genius Grant.”
