Mira Schendel

b. Zürich, Switzerland, 1919
d. São Paulo, Brazil , 1988

Originally from Switzerland, artist Mira Schendel spent her early years in Europe before moving to Brazil in the late 1940s. Geographic and metaphoric displacement is a recurring motif throughout her work. Often contextualized within the geometric abstraction espoused by Brazilian modernism, her works are abstract, minimal, formalist, and entirely handmade. In her series Graphic Objects, she created ethereal, free-floating objects that incorporate language and symbols to explore themes of transparency and encryption. Three Graphic Objects works, dating from 1960 to 1972, are part of Glenstone’s collection.
