Melvin Edwards is a process-oriented American sculptor. His vision for an artwork develops during the act of creation. Edwards compares his practice of welding found industrial objects to the physical motions of playing football. His sculptures are a product of the way he navigates his environment; through his work, he translates lived experiences into physical forms. He is best known for his Lynch Fragments series, which he began in the early 1960s in response to the deep history of violence against Black people in the United States. In these works, Edwards welds together abstracted forms that are at once vulnerable and resilient.
