German artist Martin Kippenberger was a prolific and provocative art world presence with an eclectic output that encompassed sculpture, painting, drawing, and photography, among other forms. Lively and often outrageous, Kippenberger’s persona matched the tone of his work; he welcomed criticism and controversy as further fuel for his artistic identity. Humorous with a bitter edge, Kippenberger frequently provided biting commentary on the art world through his practice. This is illustrated by his sculptural self-portrait Martin, ab in die Ecke und schäm dich (Martin, Into the Corner, You Should Be Ashamed of Yourself), 1989/1990, in Glenstone’s collection, originally made as a tongue-in-cheek response to his critics.
