Martha Rosler

b. New York, NY, 1943

American artist Martha Rosler works in a variety of media, including photography, video, and performance. Influenced by the New Left and the Women’s Movement, Rosler began creating work that brought attention to society’s shortcomings. Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful, 1967–1972, is a notable example of how Rosler juxtaposes societal issues with representations of the American Dream. This set of prints combines idyllic images of American life culled from lifestyle magazines with gritty photographs of the Vietnam War. Rosler’s oeuvre also highlights issues surrounding the objectification of women, the mistreatment of unhoused Americans, and the erasure of Native American peoples—confronting viewers with realities often misrepresented in the media and ignored by society.
