Born in Shanghai to Venetian parents, Mark di Suvero immigrated to the United States at the age of eight. While working part time in construction in New York City during the 1950s, di Suvero gathered scraps of wood and metal salvaged from demolition sites, incorporating these materials into sculptures. He has since become well known for dynamic, often large-scale sculptures made of sharply angled beams and curving metal forms. Frequently integrating moving components, di Suvero invites viewers to interact with his works spatially and physically by pushing suspended elements and climbing beams.
