Lygia Clark was a pioneering Brazilian artist who cofounded the Neo-Concrete movement. Clark was committed to making art for everyday people rather than for elite audiences, including major institutions. She was especially intrigued by the relationship between her art and its viewers and made many works whose express purpose was to explore individual perception. Espaço modulado 3A (Modulated space 3A), 1959, from Glenstone’s collection, is one such work. Composed of industrial paint on wood, the work encourages viewers to follow the contours in the wood that create a subtle sense of depth.
