Luciano Fabro

b. Turin, Italy, 1936
d. Milan, Italy, 2007

Italian artist Luciano Fabro created a dynamic body of work across sculpture, writing, and Conceptual art. As part of the postwar Italian movement Arte Povera, Fabro, like his peers, used ordinary materials that were not typically found in fine art at the time. Fabro is best known for sculptural reliefs in the shape of the map of Italy, fashioned from a range of materials such as steel, glass, leather, and gold. One example is in Glenstone’s collection, Italia d’oro (Golden Italy), 1971. In this example the map of Italy is cast in gilded bronze, inverted by a steel cable attached to the “boot” of the country.
