Louise Bourgeois

b. Paris, France, 1911
d. New York, NY, 2010

Celebrated for her singular contributions to the fields of sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, installation, and literature, French-born American artist Louise Bourgeois’s explorations of the human condition originated from her own lived experience. In great personal depth, her work examines family, femininity, fear, and the female body. Psychologically, emotionally, and often sexually charged, Bourgeois’s works intermingle the abstract and the corporeal to striking, often visceral effect. Known for works such as her early Personages, immersive Cells, large hanging sculptures, and monumental spiders, Bourgeois is among the most influential artists of the twentieth century.
