Laura Owens

b. Euclid, OH, 1970

Bold and experimental, the work of Laura Owens pushes the boundaries of painting, sculpture, and technology. Known for her large-scale mixed media paintings, Owens emerged on the Los Angeles art scene in the 1990s with works that challenged established painterly traditions. Featuring personal allusions, doodles, and craft materials, these works blurred the lines between figuration, abstraction, craft, and popular culture. Consistently pushing her practice further, Owens has explained, “I often refer to myself as being in perpetual student mode, teaching myself to make the painting I want to make.” Her work has since expanded to include books, interactive sculptures, and digital printing.
