Katsuhiko Narita

b. Pusan City, Japan, 1944
d. Kumamoto, Japan, 1992

Japanese artist Katsuhiko Narita created sculptures, paintings, and installations. Narita was a member of Mono-ha, an art movement founded to champion the purity of natural and industrial materials. Members of Mono-ha, made up of Japanese and Korean artists, prompted examination of the intersection between natural materials and their surrounding environments. Narita combined existing “things,” including large pieces of charcoal, embracing their juxtapositions and dialogues. Narita’s objects were not created per se, but rather rearranged by the artist to create new resonances and meanings.
