Juan Muñoz

b. Madrid, Spain, 1953
d. Ibiza, Spain, 2001

Spanish artist Juan Muñoz created figurative sculptures from a diverse array of materials including resin, fabric, pigment, papier-mâché, bronze, and galvanized steel. Muñoz’s haunting and humorous artworks blend realism, amorphous forms, and caricature to articulate gesture and capture the range of human expression. This is exemplified in his series Many Times, one example of which is in Glenstone’s collection, which consists of 50 human figures rendered in matte gray resin. These lively figures provoke interactions between each other, their architectural surroundings, and viewers. They appear identical but are uniquely posed in stiff groupings, dispersed across the exhibition space.
