John McCracken

b. Berkeley, CA, 1934
d. New York, NY, 2011

John McCracken was an American artist known for his Minimalist works that uniquely combined sculpture with painting. Exploring simplicity and reduction in his practice, he experimented with three-dimensional surfaces made of industrial materials such as plywood, resin, and lacquer. He began his signature Plank series of works in the 1960s, comprised of narrow, monochromatic, rectangular boards that lean against the wall. In Glenstone’s collection is Green Plank, 1968, constructed of polyester resin, fiberglass, and plywood. Despite being hand-crafted by the artist, the work’s solid green hue is perfectly uniform, appearing untouched by any human hand.
