Jenny Holzer

b. Gallipolis, OH, 1950

Jenny Holzer is a conceptual artist whose work utilizes text-based strategies to activate space. The dynamic voices she manifests embolden latent, contradictory ideals embedded within the public sphere. The use of LED signage and light projection have been a central aspect of her practice since the 1980s. Both the form and language of these early LED works conflate the authoritarian language of advertising and politics in ways that catalyze public interpretation and discussion. The singular voice of the original text Holzer generates within the immersive installation The Child Room, 1990, is that of a mother anxiously prepared to defend the life of her child. Defined by a tone that balances aggression, protectiveness, and doubt, Holzer’s sharp language directly challenges traditional representations of maternal consciousness.
