Jeff Wall

b. Vancouver, Canada, 1946

Jeff Wall is a Canadian artist whose photographic images and writings profoundly engage the historical understanding of pictorial representation. Though most of his pictures appear to capture real-time events, in actuality they are carefully composed to develop narrative cues tied to literary, philosophical, cinematic, and art historical references. Wall critically considers the technological advancement of photographic processes; his use of built environments, lightboxes, select printing methods, and digital manipulation expand the viewer’s understanding of the conditions of photography. He has also written extensively on the relationship between photography and Conceptual art.
